Although 2004 was Bateson’s centennial year (and what a celebration it was), a few events merit attention in coming months. There is particular news on two fronts.

On Aug 24-27, 2005, the University of Copenhagen will host an international conference on "Bateson and the Epistemology of the Sacred: The Science-Religion Pattern," organized by Jesper Hoffmeyer. Paper abstracts are due by Mar 3, and attendance is limited to 60, so check out their website right away to find out more about participating in this event. As many of you know, Bateson became convinced in the last decade of his life that some religious and artistic patterns of thought might express more inclusive understandings of the systemic structures of the natural world. This is a theme that cuts right across the spectrum of Bateson's interdisciplinary interests.

At the “Multiple Versions of the World: Gregory Bateson@100” conference in Berkeley in Nov 04, Nora Bateson announced an ongoing project to create a documentary film about our father to be called "That reminds me of a story..." A trailer was shown at the conference. This project involves researching existing footage of and by Gregory as well as organizing urgently needed conservation work. Nora will be illustrating Gregory's ideas through interviews with some of today's most influential thinkers as well as Gregory's own stories culled from recorded lectures. Her access to friends and colleagues from Gregory's later years should create a personal and multidimensional portrait. Nora is working with the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley CA to raise funds for a process that will take several years and substantial funding. If you want more information or have a suggestion or inspiration about a possible funder, please contact her personally by email ( or phone, 250-354-1955. You may also contact Nina Mullen at the Center for Digital Storytelling (, 510-548-2201, for more information on donations, which are tax deductible in the US.

On the publishing front, still to come are reprint editions of Sacred Unity, edited by Rodney Donaldson, and Gregory Bateson, Legacy of a Scientist, by David Lipset, both from Hampton Press. Cybernetics and Human Knowing will publish its Bateson special issue in May 2005. The book may be ordered from Imprint Academic; email or visit Kybernetes will publish a memorial issue in Fall 2005. Family Process plans a special Bateson section, organized by Marcelo Pakman.

Recent Bateson articles in print and online include: Carl Nagin’s “Gregory Bateson: The Mindful Wizard” in the Nov issue of Common Ground; the Nov 23 edition of Edge, an online journal, with a reprise of John Brockman's About Bateson including Gregory Bateson’s afterword, and updated comments on the occasion of the Centennial; and The American Journal of Semiotics Dec 2004 special issue with “Gregory Bateson: A Sign.” Check the IIS website for further updates on these and other publishing activities.
